How to Add Sounds to the Discord Soundboard

Check your sound file first. Discord refuses a sound that is too long, too big or the wrong format, and it does not always say why.

The file stays in your browser. Nothing is uploaded.

Add the sound to your server

  1. Open your server's Server Settings and find Soundboard.
  2. Choose to upload a sound and pick your file.
  3. Give it a name (2 to 32 characters), and an emoji if you want one.
  4. Save it. Members can now play it from the soundboard in a voice channel.

What Discord requires

  • An MP3 or OGG file
  • 512 KB or smaller
  • 5.2 seconds or shorter
  • A name of 2 to 32 characters
  • The Create Expressions permission in that server

How many sounds a server can hold depends on its boost level.

FAQ

Why won’t Discord upload my sound?

Most often the sound is too long or too big. A soundboard sound must be an MP3 or OGG file, 512 KB or smaller and 5.2 seconds or shorter, with a name of 2 to 32 characters. Check the file with the tool above to see which limit it breaks.

How long can a Discord soundboard sound be?

Up to 5.2 seconds, and the file can be at most 512 KB. Cut a longer clip down to its best part in your audio editor, then export it as MP3 or OGG.

Who can add sounds to a server’s soundboard?

Members with the Create Expressions permission in that server. How many sounds a server can hold depends on its boost level.
