128 × 128 pixels, under 256 KB. Discord downscales a larger image for you, but it will not shrink the file — anything over 256 KB is rejected on upload without saying which limit you hit. The tool above resizes to 128 × 128 and shows the resulting file size, so you know it will be accepted before you try.

Crop it to a square and export at 128 × 128 — that is exactly what the tool above does, in your browser. Any image editor works too; the two numbers that matter are 128 × 128 pixels and a file under 256 KB. Resizing is usually the whole fix, since a full-size photo is far over the cap while a 128 × 128 version of the same image lands around 40 KB.

Send a message containing only emoji and no text — Discord renders those at a much larger "jumbo" size automatically. Add a single word and they snap back to inline size. There is no setting that changes emoji size directly; the behaviour is entirely down to whether the message is emoji-only. Uploading a larger source image does not help either, because Discord serves emoji at fixed display sizes.

Right-click the emoji and pick Copy Link — that gives you its CDN address, which opens in any browser. Discord resizes on request rather than keeping one fixed large copy: add ?size= followed by a power of two, up to 4096. Bear in mind the uploaded source is only 128 × 128, so anything past that is upscaling rather than extra detail. Usually because the image was never resized. Discord caps emoji at 256 KB, and a full-size photo or a straight export from a design tool is many times that, so the upload is rejected before anything else is checked. Resizing to 128 × 128 fixes it on its own. The other common cause is a full server — 50 static and 50 animated slots without boosts. Animated GIFs are the one case where the cap still bites after resizing.

No — this exports still PNG and WebP. Animated emoji are GIF or APNG, and browser-side GIF encoding is slow and visibly degrades quality, so we would rather not ship a worse version of it. Worth knowing: uploading an animated emoji does not require Nitro, but using one outside the server it lives in does.
